Merdeka?

Merdeka Being lack of patriotism as my usual self, it is not so me to ponder about “Merdeka” or independence. The 31st of August 2007 denotes the 50th anniversary for our country independence from the British ruling. If you would like to assess the “performance” of a country by physical development per se, we can say that our government has done a satisfactory job.

In the other hand, it is rather sad to see how the future generations drown in the world full of entertainment and material thus giving birth to an obsessive-compulsive-artist-idolization-people. Day after day, we slowly consumed by this material-oriented thinking by adopting the classic American dreams into our mission of pursuing of the true meaning of this life.

We can always shout the word ‘Merdeka’ as loud as we can, but is it true that we are independent? Can we really express genuine and original opinion or do our opinions only revolve around what we have been molded by the external factors? Ask ourselves, are we being true to ourselves or are we conforming to others for the sake of acceptance? Think again, in what sense that we achieve 'merdeka' then?

There is nothing more necessary than truth, and in comparison with it everything else has only secondary value. This absolute will to truth: what is it? Is it the will to not allow ourselves to be deceived? Is it the will not to deceive? One does not want to be deceived, under the supposition that it is injurious, dangerous, or fatal to be deceived. (Nietzsche, 1890)
